Original design for a gun and sword hybrid weapon. Inspired by the weapons of RWBY and Final Fantasy, I wanted to design a sword that was also a gun.

The sword was designed as a single edged short sword that was also a breach loading firearm, similar to double barrel shotgun or a derringer palm pistol.

Model Sheet

Model sheet was drawn in Clip Studio Paint.

Sword Mesh

The sword was modeled in Autodesk Maya.

Creating the Model Sheet

For creating a reference sheet for the model I used Clip Studio Paint. I wanted to go for a fantasy style, a weapon that would not be used but still maintained some semblance of practicality for a fictional world. When designing the weapon, I used a medieval style or pirate sword with the combination of a breach loading gun such as a double barrel shotgun or the derringer palm pistol. I considered how the weapon would be fired, and how it would be used as a sword. The hilt was designed to be held forward, with a trigger and hammer along with a small lever for reloading. It blade contains a barrel that follows along the back, the tip of the blade curved to make room for the barrel's end. I also decided to include three gaps in the back to lower the weight of the sword for when pointing forward. Using guides made with Clip Studio's ruler tool, I drew the sword from the side, front, and back with equal proportions.

Modeling in Maya

Taking the image of the model sheet, I imported it into Autodesk Maya. I then used the tools to shape primitives into the shape of the weapons main components. I started off with the blade, getting a basic shape before adding finer details such as the barrel and weight gaps. I then moved to the hilt, a section where the blade would rotate from when reloading, and a guard with a sight gap. The hilt was shaped to a gun grip to be held similar to a firearm. To add to the fantasy feel of the weapon, I added a cloth wrap around the hilt. This was done by creating a helix primitive, adjusting it for spacing between loops, then turning one edge into a curve. With the curve, I then mirrored it to overlap. I combined both curves, shrinkwrapped it along the the hilt with Maya's deform tools. I then duplicated the curve and created a nurb face between them. This created a face that wrapped around the hilt that I could extrude, then edit the vertex points of the mesh. My intention when modeling was to make a weapon that could be used for animation, wielded by a character who would slash and reloaded like a double barrel shotgun.
