Prayin Ronin and Shogun Samurai

A 3D animation created for my Advanced Animation class. The animation is a dual between two robots, a ronin who abondoned their shogun and a samurai sent to hunt them down.

Inspired by series like Afro Samurai, the animation is a sword dual atop a mountain clearing

Modeling

The characters, props, and environment were all modeled and rigged in Autodesk Maya.

Design

The characters were all designed by me for this project.

Animation

I storyboarded the sequence in Adobe Photoshop then animated all the 3D characters in Autodesk Maya and added 2D effects in Adobe After Effects.

Concept sketch made for the ronin and samurai characters.

Concept Art

Before modeling, I sketched out a concept design for the ronin and samurai robots. This design was used as reference for modeling the character.

Character model of ronin. Character model of the samurai.

Character Models

Based on the concept art, I modeled and rigged the robot model. To differentiate them I textured one blue and the other red. The characters had to move like robots while being able to engage in the fluid movements of a swordfighter.

Wide shot of the environment model for the animation.
Katana model used for the ronin and samurai in the animation.
Model of the gun the samurai uses in the animation.
Model of a Torii gate inspired by those in Japan.

Props

In addition to the character models, I modeled the mountain clearing, katana for the robots, a futuristic pistol inspird by matchlocks for the samurai when they become desparate during the duel, and a gate that the ronin prays under.

First set of storyboards showing the initial interaction then sword clash between characters.
Second set of storyboards showing the fight continue and samurai pulling out a gun.
Third set of storyboards showing the ronin dodge the shots befor slicing the samurai.
Final set of storyboards showing the final blow.

Storyboard

Before animating, I storyboarded the sequence using Adobe Photoshop. Due to time constraints the storyboard was not followed completely, but it still acted as a reference for the character movements and sequence.
